Missionaries are simply people willing to align their hearts with the missional heartbeat of the Father. Unfortunately, the true missionary in the story of jonah is that of a merciful Creator. Jonah doesn't want to be a missionary to Israel's enemy. The LORD, however, hits Jonah with some serious consequences when the prophet is reluctant to embrace the missionary call (Ch 1), when he tries to manipulate the Father with Scripture (Ch 2), when he partially obeys God's initial instructions (Ch 3), and finally when he sulks in self-pity at the repentance of Nineveh (Ch 4). Even though the story of Jonah presents us with some positive ideals for a missionary, it primarily paints a picture of what missionaries should not do in response to God's call.
